Professional reptile breeding: cooling, pairing, egg incubation techniques.
Reproducing a cooling period (brumation) is key to successful reptile breeding.
Brumation Basics
1. **Health Check**: Breeding animals must be healthy and fully mature
2. **Fasting**: Stop feeding 2 weeks before cooling to empty the digestive tract
3. **Temperature Drop**: Over 2-4 weeks, lower daytime to 20-22°C, nighttime to 15-18°C
4. **Duration**: 6-12 weeks depending on species. 8 weeks is standard for Leopard Geckos
5. **Warming Up**: Gradually return to normal temperature over the same timeframe
Pairing Tips
- Confirm female receptivity signs (appetite reduction, behavior changes) before introduction
- Separate immediately if the male is aggressive
- Multiple matings increase fertilization rates
Egg Management
- Maintain **incubator** temperature at 28-32°C (varies by species)
- Humidity at 70-90%. Moistened vermiculite substrate is standard
- For temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) species, intermediate temperatures produce mixed ratios
Post-Hatch Care
- Don't feed until after the first shed (start 2-3 days later)
- Manage in small individual containers. Prevent cannibalism
