In coral keeping, winter water temperature management is a critical issue that can determine survival. When water temperature falls outside the proper range, bleaching and tissue necrosis can result.

Proper Water Temperature and Heater Selection

The proper water temperature for corals is 24–26°C. The most important thing in winter is maintaining stable temperatures within this range.

• Heater capacity: 1–2W per liter of water is the guideline. For a 60cm tank (approximately 60L), choose a 100–150W heater
• Integrated thermostat type is recommended for accurate temperature settings and reliability
• Always have a backup heater: Prepare a second heater of equal capacity in case the main unit fails

Power Outage Emergency Measures

Winter power outages risk rapid water temperature drops.

• Cover the tank sides and back with foam board for insulation
• Wrap the tank with blankets or insulating sheets for heat retention
• For extended outages, placing hand warmers in ziplock bags and floating on the surface is effective

Winter Lighting and Feeding Adjustment

• Maintain lighting at the normal 8–10 hours. No need to shorten for winter
• Reduce feeding slightly. Metabolism decreases with slight temperature drops, so about 80% of normal is appropriate
• Stable water quality parameters are the top priority. Avoiding sudden changes protects coral health
