Complete Kitten Training Guide — Litter, Scratching & Socialization

Start training early when you bring home a kitten. While cats do not learn commands like dogs, they can absolutely learn household rules. Be patient and make it enjoyable.

Litter Training

Cats instinctively use litter boxes, but proper setup is key.

Requirements for Success - Number of boxes: Ideally the number of cats plus one (start with 2 for a single kitten) - Location: A quiet, private spot away from the food area - Litter type: Preferences vary by cat. Try mineral, wood, or paper types - Cleanliness: Scoop clumps daily; do a full change 1-2 times per week

Steps 1. Place the kitten in the box and gently guide their front paws in a digging motion 2. Take the kitten to the box after meals and naps 3. If accidents occur, thoroughly clean the spot with an enzymatic cleaner to remove the scent 4. Never scold for accidents

Scratching Post Training

Set up appropriate scratching options before the cat discovers your furniture.

• Types: Vertical (pole type), horizontal (flat type), and cardboard. Offer what your cat prefers
• Placement: Near areas where the cat sleeps, near the sofa, and in high-traffic spots
• Guidance: Gently guide the kitten's front paws onto the post in a scratching motion
• Furniture protection: Temporarily cover furniture with aluminum foil to deter scratching
• Nail trimming: Trimming nails 1-2 times per month reduces scratching damage

Correcting Biting and Scratching

Kittens bite and scratch as part of play. Address this early.

• Do not use hands as toys: Use wand toys instead of hands or feet
• Freeze when bitten: Say "ouch!" and stop playing immediately
• Teach limits: Respond to excessive biting the way littermates would
• Provide alternatives: Offer kicker toys (long toys designed for biting and kicking)

Socialization

The 2-7 week period is the sensitive socialization phase, and experiences during this time shape lifelong temperament. Even kittens arriving at 8-12 weeks can continue socialization.

• Meet different people: Men, women, children, people with glasses
• Get used to various sounds: TV, vacuum cleaners, doorbells, thunder
• Carrier acclimation: Leave the carrier out in the room to normalize it; sudden use causes fear

Teaching the Name

• Call the kitten's name during meals and playtime
• Praise or give treats when the kitten responds to their name
• Never call the name to scold; the kitten will stop responding to it
