Carnivorous plants have vastly different light requirements depending on the species. Understanding native habitat conditions and providing appropriate lighting is the key to successful cultivation.

Light Requirements by Species

Carnivorous plants fall primarily into three types:

• Strong light lovers: Venus flytrap (Dionaea), Sundew (Drosera), Sarracenia, etc. Outdoor conditions with direct sunlight are ideal, requiring 6+ hours of daily sun.
• Medium light lovers: Nepenthes highland species. Manage in bright partial shade; avoid intense direct sunlight.
• Low-light tolerant: Nepenthes lowland species, some Heliamphora. Can manage under bright indoor light, but traps may degrade in insufficient light.

Outdoor Light Management

Outdoor cultivation should use south-facing sunny locations as the baseline. Under strong summer sun, leaf burn may occur, so note the following:

• Spring/Fall: Direct sunlight is usually fine
• Summer: Shade netting (30-50%) prevents leaf burn
• Winter: Move to the sunniest available location as daylight hours decrease

Indoor and Artificial Lighting

For indoor growing, bright window locations are the baseline, with supplemental lighting being effective.

• LED lights: Full-spectrum plant growth LEDs are optimal. Target approximately 5,000-20,000 lux
• Duration: 12-16 hours/day, managed with a timer for consistency
• Distance: LEDs produce less heat, allowing closer placement, but monitor for leaf burn

Signs of Insufficient Light

When light is inadequate, the following symptoms appear:

• Leaves become pale or light green
• Trap structures (pitchers, sticky tentacles) develop poorly
• Etiolation---the entire plant stretches and becomes leggy
• Varieties that should show red coloring lose their color
