10 common succulent care mistakes with species-specific tips to keep your plants alive.
Succulents are said to be "hard to kill," but many people do kill them with improper care.
1. Overwatering
The most common mistake. Succulents are drought-tolerant but weak against excess moisture. Water only after soil is completely dry.
2. Insufficient Light
Placing in a dark indoor spot. They become etiolated and leggy. Provide at least half a day of sunlight.
3. Using Pots Without Drainage Holes
Cute pots are tempting, but without drainage holes, root rot is inevitable. Always use pots with bottom holes.
4. Leaving Water in Saucers
Not emptying saucers after watering. Roots stay constantly wet and rot.
5. Using Regular Garden Soil
Too moisture-retentive for succulents. Use succulent-specific soil or a blend of akadama and pumice.
6. Continuous Direct Summer Sunlight
Causes leaf burn with white discoloration. Use 30-50% shade cloth in midsummer.
7. Leaving Outdoors in Winter
Frost exposure kills them. Bring indoors when minimum temperatures drop below 5°C.
8. Watering on Leaves
Water pooling in rosette centers causes rot. Water at the base with a precise pour.
9. Never Repotting
Root-bound plants stop growing. Repot every 1-2 years.
10. Over-Fertilizing
Succulents need minimal fertilizer. Excess causes etiolation. Diluted liquid fertilizer once monthly in spring/autumn is sufficient.
