10 common mistakes with pet birds including Teflon toxicity, escape prevention, and nutrition tips.
Parrots are smart and cute pets, but some mistakes can be life-threatening.
1. Using Teflon Cookware
Fumes from Teflon-coated pans (PTFE) are lethal to birds. Place cages away from the kitchen.
2. Open Windows During Free Flight
They can fly out in an instant and never return. Always check windows and doors before letting birds out.
3. Seed-Only Diet
Seeds alone cause excess fat and nutritional deficiency. Use pellets as the main diet with seeds as occasional treats.
4. No Free Flight Time
"The cage is enough" is wrong. Lack of exercise causes feather-plucking and obesity. Allow 30 minutes to 1 hour of free flight daily.
5. Keeping Birds Up Late
Birds need 10-12 hours of sleep. Cover the cage to darken it and maintain a regular schedule.
6. Feeding Human Food
Chocolate, avocado, and caffeine are toxic to birds. Don't share human meals.
7. Cage Too Small
A cage where they can't spread wings and turn around is unacceptable. Check minimum sizes for each species.
8. Not Providing Alone Time
Constant attention creates owner-dependency. Birds need some independent time too.
9. Poor Temperature Management
Birds are more vulnerable to cold than heat. Don't forget winter heating. When sick, maintain at 30°C.
10. Skipping Checkups
Birds instinctively hide illness. Annual checkups with an avian vet are essential.
