Poecilia reticulata
The fish that 'begins and ends' the tropical fish hobby. Livebearing makes breeding easy. Endless tail color and shape varieties.
The guppy (Poecilia reticulata), also known as the millionfish, is a livebearer native to Trinidad and Tobago and the coastal regions of northern Venezuela in South America. Males, though small at 3–4 cm, possess spectacular fan-shaped caudal fins and vibrant colorations produced through decades of selective breeding — resulting in dozens of recognized strains. Females are larger but plainly colored. Guppies are among the hardiest of all aquarium fish, tolerating a wide range of water conditions (pH 6.5–7.5, 22–28°C), making them ideal for beginners. Their peaceful temperament allows cohabitation with most small tropical fish, though fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs should be avoided. As livebearers, guppies reproduce readily in any established aquarium — to prevent overpopulation, males and females should be separated or natural predation by tankmates used as population control. Omnivorous and unfussy about food, they thrive on quality flake food, micro pellets, and occasional frozen treats. A slight preference for harder water means that a pinch of aquarium salt can be beneficial.
