Hikari medaka is a general term for improved varieties whose dorsal scales shimmer in silver-white to blue-white metallic sheen through iridophores. Many strains are derived from crosses with Miyuki medaka, with external body light coverage determining quality grade. The 'hikari body type' mutation also features symmetrical dorsal and anal fins and a butterfly-like caudal fin. Top-view observation best showcases the dorsal shimmer under sunlight or LED lighting. Hardy in 5–30°C, neutral to slightly alkaline water. Dark containers enhance the glow; shallow top-viewing containers are ideal for appreciation.
