Pilea peperomioides
A houseplant hugely popular in Scandinavia with round coin-shaped leaves. Cute form perfect for social media.
Pilea peperomioides, the Chinese money plant or UFO plant, is a perennial in the family Urticaceae, native to Yunnan and southern Sichuan provinces in China. Its distinctive coin-shaped, bright green, pancake-like leaves held on slender central stems give it an unmistakable appearance. Introduced to Europe in the 1970s by a Norwegian missionary, it spread widely through cuttings shared between friends before it was formally described botanically — hence its alternative name 'missionary plant'. The plant readily produces offsets (pups) at the base, making propagation and sharing simple, which has earned it the additional nickname 'friendship plant'. It prefers bright indirect light; direct sun can cause yellowing. Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. A compact, cheerful, and easy-care plant that has become a perennial favourite among houseplant enthusiasts worldwide.
