Vaccinium corymbosum and related species, commonly known as blueberry (Buruberry in Japanese), are deciduous to semi-evergreen shrubs in the family Ericaceae, native to North America. As bonsai, blueberries offer a full four-season display: delicate white to pink urn-shaped flowers in spring, edible blue-black fruits in summer, vivid red-orange autumn foliage, and sculptural bare branches in winter. The species requires acidic soil (pH 4.5–5.5), preferring kanuma soil similar to satsuki azalea cultivation. Cross-pollination between two or more cultivars significantly improves fruit set. As a fruiting bonsai, it uniquely combines ornamental value with the pleasure of harvesting edible fruit.
