Long tape-like leaves swaying in current create beautiful background. Spreads explosively by runners. Extremely hardy.
Vallisneria is a genus of submerged perennial aquatic plants in the family Hydrocharitaceae, widely distributed across tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, and North America. Its long, strap-like to spirally twisted leaves sway elegantly in water currents, imparting natural movement to background plantings. The genus propagates vigorously via runners, requiring minimal maintenance once established. Exceptional hardiness — tolerating a broad pH range of 6–8, low light, and no CO2 supplementation — makes it suitable for goldfish tanks and large-fish aquaria where more delicate plants would fail. One of the oldest cultivated aquarium plants, Vallisneria has remained a staple of the hobby since its earliest days.
