Agave salmiana

Agave salmiana is a large species native to the states of San Luis Potosí, Oaxaca, Puebla, and neighboring areas of Mexico, where it has been cultivated by indigenous peoples for centuries. It is the primary source of pulque, a traditional fermented beverage made from the plant's sap, and is also used in mezcal production. The broad, dark green to blue-green leaves are thick and bear large, sharp marginal teeth. Mature rosettes can reach 1–2 m tall and 2–3 m or more in diameter; the flowering spike may extend 5–10 m. Growth is relatively fast for an agave. It requires full sun and ample outdoor space—this is not a plant for small gardens or containers. In the ground, it needs little supplemental water beyond rainfall. Cold hardiness extends to about -5°C, making outdoor cultivation viable in Japan's warmer regions. Its imposing scale and cultural significance make it a dramatic feature plant for botanical gardens and large landscapes.
