Agave guadalajarana
A rare agave from Guadalajara, Mexico. Popular for broad blue-gray leaves and compact form.
Agave guadalajarana takes its name from the Guadalajara region of Jalisco, Mexico, where it grows in dry hillside habitats. Its broad, short, blue-gray leaves form a compact, well-proportioned rosette with small marginal teeth and a terminal spine. Mature plants reach 30–60 cm tall and 50–80 cm wide. Growth is slow, and the species is highly drought-tolerant. Full sun and outdoor cultivation are recommended. Water moderately during the spring-to-autumn growing season and reduce to near-drought conditions in winter. A sharply draining soil mix is essential. Cold hardiness is around 5°C—frost protection is needed. Because its native range is restricted, it is rarely encountered in cultivation, and specimens are eagerly sought by collectors. The appealing blue-gray coloration and manageable compact form place it alongside A. potatorum and A. isthmensis in the popular category of compact ornamental agaves. Its rarity adds significant collectible value.
