Agave bovicornuta
An agave with distinctive spines curving like cow horns. Beautiful glossy bright green leaves.
Agave bovicornuta is a medium-sized species from the mountain slopes of Sonora, Sinaloa, and Chihuahua, Mexico. The name 'bovicornuta' means 'cow-horned,' referring to the distinctive marginal teeth that curve outward in an arc, resembling the horns of cattle. The leaves are a vivid, glossy bright green—unusual among agaves, which tend toward blue or gray—making the curving dark teeth especially striking in contrast. Mature rosettes reach 40–80 cm tall. Growth rate is moderate. Full sun brings out the best leaf gloss. Water when the soil dries, using a well-draining mix, and reduce to once or twice a month in winter. Cold hardiness is around 5°C—protect from frost. As a Sonoran native, it handles intense summer heat well. The combination of glossy green foliage and ornate, sculptural teeth makes A. bovicornuta a highly desirable species, and its relative scarcity in Japanese cultivation adds to its collectible appeal.
