Agave americana
Most widely known agave. Grows huge, often seen in parks and gardens. Also called Century Plant. Variegated forms popular.
Agave americana, commonly known as the century plant or American aloe, is a large species native to Mexico and parts of Texas. The nickname 'century plant' reflects its long wait before flowering, though it typically blooms after 10–30 years, not a full century. Its long, arching blue-green leaves bear sharp marginal teeth and a stout terminal spine, and mature plants can reach 1–2 m tall with a spread of 2–3 m or more. It is drought-tolerant and thrives in full sun, requiring minimal watering once established in the ground. Cold hardiness extends to around -5°C, allowing outdoor year-round cultivation in warmer parts of Japan. Widely naturalized across the Mediterranean Basin, the Canary Islands, South America, and beyond, it has also been used historically as a fiber crop and in the production of fermented beverages. The variegated cultivar 'Marginata', with yellow-edged leaves, is a popular ornamental selection.
