Goldfish Breeding Guide: Spawning & Fry Rearing

Goldfish breeding may seem challenging, but with proper environmental setup, it can be thoroughly enjoyed at home. Let's prepare for the breeding season that begins with rising water temperatures in spring.

Basic Breeding Requirements

The following conditions must be met for goldfish to begin breeding behavior:

• Water temperature: Stable at 15–20°C (simulating the spring temperature rise)
• Mature individuals: Males and females at least 2 years old are needed
• Photoperiod: Approximately 12–14 hours of light per day acts as a stimulus
• Nutritional condition: Feed live foods (bloodworms, daphnia, etc.) generously before breeding

Identifying Males and Females

Males and females become easier to distinguish during breeding season.

• Males: White breeding tubercles (nuptial tubercles) appear on pectoral fins and gill covers. Males chase females
• Females: Abdomen becomes noticeably rounder. Movement becomes slightly slower

Spawning and Fertilization Process

When males begin vigorously chasing females, spawning is near. Place spawning substrates (aquatic plants or artificial spawning mops) in the tank.

1. Females deposit eggs on spawning substrates
2. Males release sperm over the eggs (external fertilization)
3. Remove parent fish to a separate tank after spawning (they may eat the eggs)
4. Fertilized eggs are transparent; unfertilized eggs turn white and cloudy

Raising Fry (Needle Fry)

Newly hatched fry are extremely small and require delicate care.

• Immediately after hatching: No feeding needed for 2–3 days as they survive on egg yolk
• Initial food: Infusoria (paramecium) or PSB (photosynthetic bacteria) are ideal
• Fry food: Transition to brine shrimp or powdered food after one week
• Water changes: Perform small daily changes (10–20% of total volume)
• Temperature management: Maintain around 25°C
