Complete Goldfish Tank Setup Guide for Beginners

Many goldfish deaths are caused by inadequate tank setup. Proper preparation before introducing fish is the most important step.

Tank Selection

10-15L per goldfish is ideal. 45cm (30L) for 2-3 fish. 60cm (60L) for 3-5. Fancy varieties need less space than active comet/wakin types.

Essential Equipment

Filter (hang-on, sponge, or top-mounted), air pump, thermometer, and dechlorinator. Heater optional (goldfish tolerate cool water).

Substrate

Large gravel (Oiso) is most popular. Bare bottom is easiest to clean and preferred for ranchu. Avoid small gravel that goldfish can swallow.

Water Preparation

Set up tank, add substrate, fill with dechlorinated water, run filter for minimum 1 week (preferably 2-3) with bacterial supplements before adding fish.

Fish Introduction

Float bag 30 minutes for temperature matching, gradually mix tank water into bag over 45 minutes, then net fish into tank (discard bag water). Don't feed on introduction day.
