Betta

The Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens), commonly known as betta, is native to Southeast Asia including Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Vietnam. In the wild, it inhabits rice paddies, shallow ponds, and slow-moving streams, surviving low-oxygen conditions through a unique labyrinth organ that allows direct air breathing. Selective breeding has produced an extraordinary diversity of fin shapes — halfmoon, crowntail, double tail — and colors ranging from vivid blues and reds to multicolored patterns. The most critical aspect of betta keeping is the extreme territorial aggression among males: two males must never share the same tank. Females and other peaceful species can sometimes be housed together with careful monitoring. A minimum 5-liter tank with a heater maintaining 26–28°C is recommended. Bettas favor protein-rich foods such as specialized pellets and frozen bloodworms. During breeding, males construct bubble nests at the water surface and perform parental care for hatched fry — a fascinating behavior rarely seen in aquarium fish.
