Complete betta breeding guide: conditioning, bubble nest building, spawning, egg care, and fry rearing.
Betta breeding is one of the most dramatic experiences in tropical fish keeping, featuring bubble nest construction, a unique spawning embrace, and dedicated male parental care.
Select healthy adults (4-12 months old). Set up a shallow breeding tank (20-30L, 15cm water depth, 27-28C) with floating plants for bubble nest anchoring.
Introduce the female in a clear container for 2-3 days of visual contact. When the male builds a bubble nest and the female shows vertical bars, remove the barrier. Some initial chasing is normal.
The male wraps around the female in an embrace, squeezing out eggs. He collects fallen eggs in his mouth and deposits them in the bubble nest. This repeats 10-40 times for 100-300 total eggs. Remove the female immediately after spawning.
Eggs hatch in ~48 hours. Fry hang from the bubble nest for 2-3 days absorbing yolk sac nutrition. Remove the male when fry begin free-swimming. Feed infusoria/PSB initially, transitioning to baby brine shrimp by day 5-7.
Bri-Choku breeders offer bettas with known genetics and breeding history.
