A hardy small Dendrobium from Australia with pink fragrant flower spikes.
Dendrobium kingianum, the Pink Rock Orchid, is a small epiphytic orchid native to rocky outcrops and trees in eastern Australia (Queensland to New South Wales). Plants grow 15–30 cm with slender pseudobulbs and leathery leaves. The fragrant flowers, 1–2 cm across in pale to deep pink, purple, or white, are borne five to fifteen per stem in spring (January–March in Japan). The species is notably cold-hardy, tolerating temperatures down to about 5°C, making outdoor cultivation possible in mild Japanese winters. It prefers a bright position with some direct sun, a free-draining bark or pumice medium, and a dry rest in autumn to initiate flower spikes.
