An oriental orchid blooming in late autumn to winter, treasured for elegant flowers and fragrance.
Cymbidium kanran (kanran) is a terrestrial orchid native to warm-temperate evergreen forest floors in southern Japan, the Korean Peninsula, southern China, and Taiwan. Slender flowering stems bear seven to twelve flowers, 3–5 cm across, in autumn to winter (October–December); colors vary widely—green, yellow, red, brown, purple—and all forms share a pronounced, elegant fragrance. One of the most esteemed oriental orchids in Japan, fine selected specimens command very high prices. Cultivation requires bright dappled shade, summer shading, frost protection, humus-rich well-draining soil, and regular moisture.
