One of the largest Bulbophyllum species with huge leaves and uniquely scented flowers, popular among collectors.
Bulbophyllum phalaenopsis is one of the largest species in the genus, native to tropical rainforests in New Guinea and the Philippines. Its most striking feature is the enormous leathery leaves, which can exceed 1 m in length, resembling Phalaenopsis foliage (hence the name). The large pseudobulbs support these impressive leaves. Flowers are dark red to purple-brown and emit a distinctive odor. Overall plant height (leaf length) reaches 50–100 cm. Cultivation requires high temperatures (22–32°C), high humidity, bright indirect light, and a large basket or pot with well-draining bark. Consistent moisture is important, as the species dislikes drying out. Its dramatic foliage and rarity make it highly prized among Bulbophyllum collectors.
