A popular cactus genus with beautiful ribs on spherical bodies. Beautiful flowers and many species collected.
Gymnocalycium (chin cactus) is a genus of about 70 cactus species native to South America, distributed across Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia. The genus name refers to the smooth, spine-free flower buds, a distinctive feature. Plants form compact, globe-shaped to slightly flattened bodies ranging from 3 to 20 cm in diameter depending on species. Unusually for cacti, Gymnocalycium tolerates lower light levels than most relatives and can thrive under bright indirect light, making them well suited for indoor windowsill culture. They bloom relatively freely in white, pink, or cream. Chlorophyll-free colorful mutant forms (red, orange, yellow, pink) known as moon cacti or color gymnos are widely sold grafted onto green rootstocks. Watering two to three times monthly during spring through autumn, with near-complete drought in winter, is appropriate.
