An SPS coral growing with finger-like branches. Hardiest and easiest to keep among Montipora.
Montipora digitata (family Acroporidae), the finger or branching montipora, is an SPS coral widespread on shallow Indo-Pacific reef flats. Dense clusters of slender finger-like branches form bushy colonies 10–30 cm across, with branching architecture providing efficient light exposure and flow access. Colors span green, purple, pink, orange, and brown. Among Montipora species, M. digitata is considered the most forgiving, making it the classic stepping-stone SPS for hobbyists transitioning from LPS to SPS keeping. Moderate to high lighting (150–300 PAR) and moderate turbulent flow support vigorous growth. Parameters (24–27°C, KH 8–9, Ca 400–440 ppm) should be maintained stably. Growth rate is rapid, and fragging is exceptionally easy—severed branches adhere quickly to new substrate, making this one of the most widely traded SPS frags in the hobby. Montipora-eating nudibranchs (Phestilla spp.) are a documented threat; prophylactic dipping of new specimens is strongly recommended. A natural-looking, structurally compelling addition to any reef display.
