Drosera tokaiensis
A Japanese endemic sundew discovered in the Tokai region with intermediate leaf shape.
Drosera tokaiensis is a sundew endemic to Japan, found primarily in the Tokai region (Aichi, Shizuoka, and adjacent prefectures) in moist sandy soils and wetlands. Molecular and morphological studies indicate it originated as a natural hybrid between D. spatulata and D. rotundifolia and subsequently stabilized as an independent species—its leaf shape is intermediate between those of its two parent species. Many of its natural populations have declined due to habitat loss and require conservation attention. In cultivation, D. tokaiensis adapts well to the Japanese climate and can be grown outdoors; it requires acidic, nutrient-poor media (sphagnum or peat-perlite), tray watering with pure or rainwater, strong sunlight, and a mild winter rest period. It is of particular interest to Japanese carnivorous plant enthusiasts as a native endemic.
