Fern with beautiful deeply lobed dark green leaves. Epiphytic, attached to driftwood. Creates mature, refined aquascape.
Bolbitis is a genus of epiphytic ferns in the family Dryopteridaceae, with species distributed across tropical Africa and Asia. The most commonly cultivated species in the aquarium hobby is B. heudelotii (African water fern), native to the Congo Basin, admired for its semi-transparent, deeply pinnate leaves of exceptional delicacy. Like other epiphytic aquarium plants, the rhizome must be attached to driftwood or rock rather than buried. Gentle water flow accentuates the graceful movement of its fronds. It grows under low to moderate light with CO2 supplementation recommended, though even modest CO2 levels produce noticeable improvement. Growth is slow but plants remain stable for years once established. Alongside Microsorum and Anubias, Bolbitis is considered one of the classic trio of epiphytic plants central to driftwood-focused aquascape design.
