A cold-hardy agave native to American Southwest desert. Characterized by sharp spines and blue-white leaves.
Agave utahensis is native to the desert and semi-desert landscapes of Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and California, where it grows on dry, rocky terrain in the Mojave and Great Basin deserts. It is among the most cold-hardy agave species, reportedly surviving temperatures as low as -15°C. Its narrow, blue-white to gray-green leaves bear pale yellow to white marginal teeth and a long, rigid terminal spine. Mature rosettes are compact, reaching 20–40 cm tall and 30–60 cm wide. Growth is extremely slow. As a true desert plant, it demands full sun, minimal water, and sharply draining, gritty soil—excess moisture is particularly dangerous and can cause rapid root rot. Watering can be eliminated entirely in winter. In Japan, its exceptional cold hardiness allows outdoor year-round cultivation in all but the snowiest regions. This plant rewards patient, hands-off cultivation: neglect suits it far better than attentiveness.
