Agave potatorum
Also known as Kisshoukan in Japanese. Beautiful contrast of rounded leaves and red spines. Compact and suited for pots.
Agave potatorum, known in Japan as 'Kisshoukan' (吉祥冠), is a medium-sized species native to the dry mountain slopes of Oaxaca and Puebla in Mexico. Its short, broadly rounded blue-gray leaves radiate symmetrically, edged with reddish-brown to dark brown teeth and tipped with a sharp terminal spine—a striking color contrast that makes it one of the most ornamentally appealing agaves. Mature rosettes reach 20–40 cm tall and 30–60 cm wide, making it ideal for container growing. Growth is slow, and the plant responds well to bright direct sunlight, which intensifies leaf color. Water when the soil has fully dried, reducing to monthly in winter. A well-draining soil mix is essential. Cold hardiness is moderate—protect from frost below 5°C. Significant variation in leaf shape and spine color exists among individuals, and numerous selected and hybrid forms are available in cultivation. It has long been a staple of Japanese succulent collections.
