Agave mapisaga
A large agave from central Mexico with many long, narrow leaves forming a majestic rosette. Traditionally used to produce pulque (fermented beverage).
Agave mapisaga is one of the largest species in the genus, native to the central Mexican highlands at elevations of 2,000–2,800 m. Mature rosettes can reach 2–3 m in diameter with flower stalks soaring to 8–10 m. Indigenous peoples of Mexico have cultivated this giant agave for centuries to produce pulque, a traditional fermented beverage. The broad, elongated gray-green leaves are somewhat flexible, with relatively small marginal teeth. Its massive stature creates a dramatic landscape presence, though it is unsuitable for container culture due to sheer size. Cold hardiness is moderate, tolerating brief exposure to approximately -5°C. This species holds significant cultural and agricultural importance in Mexican history.
