Agave lechuguilla is a small to medium agave native to vast areas from Texas and New Mexico in the USA southward through the Chihuahuan and Sonoran deserts of northern Mexico. It is one of the most emblematic plants of the Chihuahuan Desert. Stiff, narrow green to gray-green leaves grow semi-erect, lined with small upward-pointing marginal teeth. The extremely sharp terminal spine poses a genuine hazard to wildlife and humans alike. Mature rosettes are relatively small at 30–50 cm in diameter but produce offsets prolifically, forming extensive colonies. The fiber extracted from its leaves (ixtle) has been used by indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Cold-hardy to approximately -10°C and adapted to extreme aridity. Its small size and easy maintenance make it ideal for creating a desert atmosphere.
