Agave desmettiana
A beautiful agave with soft elegantly curving leaves. Known by Japanese name 'Taki no Shiraito'.
Agave desmettiana, known in Japan as 'Taki no Shiraito' (滝の白糸), is a medium to moderately large species native to the coastal and inland areas of Jalisco and Colima, Mexico. Its relatively soft, glossy green to blue-green leaves arch gracefully outward, giving the plant a flowing, almost fountain-like form. The teeth are small and the overall plant is safer to work with than many agaves. Mature rosettes reach 60–100 cm tall and 100–150 cm wide. Growth is comparatively fast, producing an impressive specimen in a few years. It performs best in full sun but tolerates bright partial shade. Water somewhat more generously than typical agaves—when the soil dries, water thoroughly. Cold hardiness reportedly extends to around -5°C, enabling outdoor cultivation in warmer parts of Japan. The yellow-margined cultivar 'Variegata' is extremely popular among collectors. Overall, its attractive arching form, faster growth, and relative ease of care make it a satisfying choice for collectors ready to move beyond the smallest compact species.
