An aeonium with mystical deep black-purple rosette. Characterized by winter growth pattern.
Aeonium 'Schwarzkopf' (Black Rose or Black Tree Aeonium) is a cultivar of A. arboreum native to the Canary Islands, celebrated for its dramatically dark purple-to-black, glossy rosettes. The depth of coloration is directly related to sun exposure: full direct sun produces the deepest black, while shade causes the foliage to revert toward green. As a winter-growing plant, it is active from autumn through spring and dormant in summer, when the rosette leaves curl inward. Mature plants reach 30–100 cm in height on woody, branching stems. Watering follows the growing season; summer watering is withheld almost entirely. Hot, humid summers are the primary management challenge and require good air circulation. Frost tolerance extends to about 3–5°C. Propagation by stem cuttings or detached rosettes is reliable. The cultivar's extraordinary visual impact makes it one of the most widely grown succulent specimens worldwide.
