Prosthechea cochleata, the national flower of Belize, is an epiphytic orchid native to Central America (Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama), the Caribbean islands, and Florida. The flower has an unmistakable inverted appearance: green, reflexed petals and sepals hang downward while the shell-shaped deep purple lip faces upward, resembling an octopus. Plants grow 20–40 cm with pseudobulbs bearing one to two leathery leaves. Near-continuous flowering makes it exceptional among orchids. Cultivation is straightforward: bright indirect light, temperatures of 15–28°C, a free-draining bark or pumice mix, and regular moisture. Its year-round bloom, easy care, and distinctive flowers make it ideal for beginners.
