Miltonia spectabilis
A Brazilian Miltonia species with large flowers and distinctive lip patterns, relatively heat tolerant.
Miltonia spectabilis is an epiphytic orchid native to the Atlantic coastal forests of eastern Brazil (Espírito Santo to Bahia). Plants grow 20–35 cm with pseudobulbs bearing thin, pale-green leaves. The large flowers, 8–12 cm across, display white to cream petals with a strikingly patterned lip in purple, red, and pink markings. One to two flowers are produced per stem in summer to autumn (August–October). As a lowland Brazilian species, it tolerates warmer conditions (15–30°C) than its cooler-growing Miltoniopsis cousins, making it relatively easier to cultivate. Bright indirect light, humidity of 60–70%, and a bark or sphagnum medium with regular watering during growth and reduced water in winter are recommended.
