Brooke's Stag Beetle

Odontolabis brookeana is a large stag beetle endemic to the island of Borneo, notable for its glossy jet-black body and elegantly curved mandibles that characterize the Odontolabis genus. Adults reach 50–90 mm in body length. It inhabits the tropical rainforests of Borneo, living in and around decaying hardwood. Optimal captive temperature is 20–24°C; maintaining high humidity of approximately 70–85% is critical. An enclosure that provides adequate ventilation while retaining moisture is required. Egg-laying occurs in fermented substrate or softwood logs; larvae develop well in fermented substrate or fungal substrate bottles. Adults eat beetle jelly and live approximately 6–12 months. The combination of Borneo endemism, lustrous black coloration, and the distinctive curved mandible form of the Odontolabis genus make O. brookeana a characterful and sought-after exotic stag beetle.
