Monsonia multifida grows on dry rocky terrain from South Africa to Namibia within the Geraniaceae family. The trunk becomes substantially swollen and caudex-like, from which stems bearing finely divided, fern-like leaves emerge—the foliage is as finely dissected as the name (multifida = many-cut) suggests, creating a delicate beauty. Small geranium-like flowers are produced. It is a winter grower. During the growing season (autumn through spring), full sun and moderate watering are appropriate; summer dormancy requires complete drought. Reasonable cold tolerance. The contrast between the thick caudex and the refined, finely divided foliage is the plant's primary aesthetic appeal.
