Drosera petiolaris
A tropical sundew from northern Australia with rosette trap leaves on long petioles.
Drosera petiolaris is a tropical sundew native to the monsoonal savanna and rocky outcrops of northern Australia (Northern Territory and northern Queensland). It is characterized by long, slender petioles tipped with small, rounded, mucilage-bearing laminae, a rosette structure quite different in appearance from most sundews. The species is adapted to the strongly seasonal Australian monsoon climate, actively growing during the wet season and entering a period of reduced activity or dormancy during the dry season—a cycle that should be mimicked in cultivation for optimal health. Warm temperatures of 25–35°C are essential; the plant is extremely cold-sensitive. It grows in nutrient-poor, well-drained media under full sun. A challenging but rewarding species for experienced growers familiar with tropical sundews.
