Drosera magnifica
Discovered in 2015, one of the world's largest sundews, endemic to one mountain in Brazil.
Drosera magnifica, the magnificent sundew, was described scientifically in 2015 following its discovery through photographs posted on Facebook—making it the first species described based on social media images. It is native to a single mountaintop in Minas Gerais state, Brazil, at approximately 1,500 m elevation. The species is the largest known sundew, with leaves potentially exceeding 1.2 m in length. Its restricted range of a single population and the consequent threats to its survival have led to its classification as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. The plants grow on cliff faces, catching insects with their mucilaginous tentacles. Cultivation remains poorly documented; it is presumed to require cool montane conditions, high humidity, and nutrient-poor media similar to other large Brazilian sundews.
