Japanese native juniper with sharp needle-like foliage. Rougher texture than Shimpaku. Versatile from shohin to large sizes. Excellent for deadwood features.
Juniperus rigida, commonly known as Temple juniper or Tosho, is a native Japanese juniper found along coastlines and hillsides throughout Japan. Unlike the soft scale leaves of Shimpaku, Tosho bears sharply pointed, needle-like leaves arranged in whorls of three, giving the tree a rougher, more rugged character. The brownish fibrous bark peels in strips as the tree matures. In bonsai, Tosho is valued for its sturdy constitution and its receptiveness to jin and shari deadwood techniques, which complement its wild, windswept character. It tolerates a range of styles and adapts well to both formal and informal bonsai forms.
