Japanese Iris Bonsai

Iris ensata (Hanashōbu) and Iris laevigata (Kakitsubata), collectively known as Japanese water iris, are rhizomatous perennial plants in the family Iridaceae, native to Japan, China, and the Korean Peninsula. In the context of 'kusa-mono bonsai' (grass-style bonsai), these irises are planted in shallow water trays or on moss-covered slabs to evoke the atmosphere of a waterside landscape. The large, elegant flowers — in purple, violet, white, pink, and their combinations — appear in May to June and are among the most spectacular blooms in the bonsai calendar. Japanese water iris cultivation has a rich history; Hanashōbu alone has over 5,000 named cultivars developed across the Edo, Higo, and Ise regional traditions.
