Bolbitis heudelotii
A beautiful African fern with delicate deep green leaves. Grown attached to driftwood.
Bolbitis heudelotii, known in the hobby as the African water fern, Congo fern, or creeping fern, is an epiphytic fern native to subtropical and tropical Africa from Ethiopia west to Senegal, and south to northern South Africa. Its beautifully semi-transparent, deeply pinnate fronds sway in water flow with an ethereal quality that makes it one of the most aesthetically prized epiphytic plants in aquascaping. The rhizome is attached to driftwood in the same manner as Anubias and Microsorum; burying it in substrate invariably causes rot. Growth occurs under low to moderate light, with CO2 supplementation noticeably accelerating development. Once established, plants are stable and long-lived. Soft, slightly acidic water — approximating the Congo River's natural conditions — is preferred. Alongside Microsorum pteropus and Anubias, it forms the classic triumvirate of hardscape-mounted aquarium plants.
