Succulents have varying growth rates by species, from fast-growing types to extremely slow ones. Understanding each species' characteristics allows you to prevent etiolation while growing them healthily.

Growth Rate by Species

• Echeveria — Moderate growth. Produces 1–2 new leaves per month during growing season, forming rosettes 10–20cm in diameter. Readily produces offsets
• Haworthia — Slow growth. Produces about 2–3 offsets per year. Most varieties are compact at 5–15cm in diameter
• Sedum — Very fast growth. Spreads along the ground, quickly becoming ground cover
• Aeonium — Moderate growth. Actively grows autumn through spring and goes dormant in summer (winter-type). Develops distinctive stem-rising forms

Preventing Etiolation

Etiolation (stretching out thin and leggy) is a succulent's worst enemy.

• Sufficient sunlight: 4–6+ hours of direct sunlight daily is ideal. South-facing windows indoors
• Water sparingly: Water 2–3 days after the soil completely dries
• Ensure air circulation: Stagnation causes not only etiolation but also root rot

Seasonal Care

• Spring & Autumn (growing season): Most active growth. Provide plenty of sunlight and water when soil dries. Diluted liquid fertilizer once monthly
• Summer: Watch for heat and humidity. Provide shade cloth and air circulation, water during cool morning or evening hours
• Winter: Most varieties are dormant. Reduce watering to once or twice monthly, protect from frost
