Mandarin Dragonet Care Guide — Feeding & Copepod Population Management

The Mandarin Dragonet (Synchiropus splendidus) is one of the most beautiful reef fish but is notoriously difficult to feed. Success depends on maintaining a steady supply of copepods.

Building a Copepod Refugium

Mandarin dragonets constantly graze on copepods and amphipods in the wild.

• Refugium: Set up an isolated compartment with macroalgae (Chaetomorpha) in your sump
• Live rock: Place abundant porous live rock to harbor microfauna
• Cultivation: Culture copepods separately and periodically add to the tank
• Guideline: 90cm+ tanks with mature environments (6+ months established) recommended

Pellet Training

Relying solely on copepods is risky, making pellet training important.

• Start with frozen brine shrimp (most readily accepted)
• Mix in frozen copepods
• Gradually introduce pelleted foods
• Purchasing pre-trained specimens is the most reliable approach

Tank Environment

• Temperature: 24-26C, gentle flow, fine aragonite sand bed, standard reef lighting

Compatibility Notes

Mandarins are peaceful but males fight viciously. Pair keeping is ideal.
