Hedgehog Keeping Guide — Temperature, Diet & Handling Tips

The African pygmy hedgehog is a popular small animal known for its unique appearance and charming behavior. With proper knowledge, even beginners can keep one successfully.

Temperature Control Is Critical

Temperature Management Methods - **Winter**: Overhead ceramic heater + panel heater + thermostat - **Summer**: Air conditioning. A fan alone is insufficient - **Thermometer**: Place inside the cage and monitor constantly

Diet

Hedgehog Food (Main Diet) - High-protein, low-fat hedgehog-specific food - High-quality cat food can be used as a substitute

Insect Treats (Supplementary/Snacks) - **Mealworms**: Most popular. High in fat, so limit quantities - **Crickets**: Well-balanced nutrition - **Dried insects**: For owners who aren't comfortable with live feeders

Vegetables and Fruits - Small amounts of apple, banana, and carrot. Limit sugary fruits

Handling Tips

1. First week after adoption: Don't touch; let them acclimate to the environment
2. Get them used to your scent: Place a cloth with your scent in the cage
3. Scoop from below: If they curl up, wait patiently on your palm
4. Short daily sessions: Start with 5--10 minutes and gradually extend
5. Don't give up when quills are raised: With time, they'll learn to lower their quills

Common Health Issues

• Mites: Watch for dandruff at the base of quills. Treat with medication from a vet
• Dermatitis: Caused by bedding allergies or unsanitary conditions. Review bedding choices
• Obesity: Prevent with an exercise wheel and portion control
• Tumors: Incidence increases after age 3. Check regularly by feeling the body
