To keep houseplants thriving, it's important to provide each species with the right amount of light. Rather than just placing them in a "somewhat bright spot," understand what light conditions your plants naturally prefer and choose the optimal location.

Three Light Levels and Plant Categories

High Light (Bright Direct Light) These plants prefer direct sunlight or bright windowsills. Indoors, **within 1 meter of a south-facing window** is ideal.

Medium Light (Bright Indirect Light) These plants can grow in bright shade or filtered light through sheer curtains. **1-3 meters from a window** is appropriate indoors.

• Anthurium, Strelitzia

Low Light Tolerant These plants dislike direct sunlight and can be managed **more than 3 meters from a window** in interior spaces.

Light Levels by Window Orientation

• South-facing: Highest light levels throughout the day. Best for high-light plants. May need shade in summer
• East-facing: Gentle morning light. Ideal for medium-light plants
• West-facing: Strong afternoon light. Can get too hot in summer
• North-facing: Low light levels year-round. Best for low-light plants

Signs of Insufficient Light

Signs that your plant needs more light:

• Etiolation: Stems become thin and leggy with elongated internodes
• Pale coloring: Greens fade; variegated plants may lose variegation
• Smaller new leaves: Leaf size progressively decreases
• Leaf drop: Lower leaves fall off one by one

Artificial Lighting (Grow Lights)

Plant grow LEDs are effective in rooms without windows or with insufficient light.

• Intensity: Target 5,000-15,000 lux for medium-light plants
• Duration: 12-16 hours per day; timer management is convenient
• Color temperature: 5,000-7,000K (white to cool white) is effective for photosynthesis
