Caudex Rooting Guide: How to Root Bare-Root Plants

Wild-collected or bare-root imported caudex plants arrive without roots. Rooting management is the most challenging aspect of caudex cultivation, but understanding the procedure dramatically improves success rates.

What is Bare-Root?

A bare-root plant is one without roots. Plants are often exported with roots removed due to import regulations and to reduce shipping costs.

Pre-Rooting Preparation

• Duration: As quick as 2-3 weeks, as long as 3+ months

Signs of Successful Rooting

• New growth appears: The most obvious sign of rooting
• Plant becomes stable: No wobbling when gently moved
• Pot becomes lighter: After rooting, the plant begins absorbing water, shortening intervals between waterings
