Winter Carnivorous Plant Care — Cold Weather Protection Guide

Carnivorous plants require opposite winter management depending on the species. Properly distinguish between those that need dormancy and those that need warmth.

Species Requiring Dormancy

Venus Flytrap

• Requires 3--4 months of dormancy at 0--10°C in winter
• The above-ground parts may appear dead, but the rhizome is alive
• Reduce watering and lower the water tray level to about half the normal level
• Skipping dormancy weakens growth the following year, so be sure to expose them to cold

Sarracenia

• Also requires winter dormancy. Manage at 0--10°C
• Old pitcher leaves will die back, but new shoots emerge in spring, so don't worry
• Outdoor management is fine as long as they don't freeze solid

Species Requiring Warmth

Nepenthes (Tropical Pitcher Plant)

• Being tropical, maintain temperatures at 15°C or above
• Keep indoors in a warm location and maintain humidity at 50--60% or higher
• A terrarium or greenhouse is ideal

Sundew (Drosera)

• Temperate species (like D. rotundifolia) can go dormant outdoors
• Tropical species (like D. adelae) need warmth at 15°C or above

The Importance of Dormancy

For carnivorous plants, dormancy is a rejuvenation period.

• Without dormancy, plants exhaust their energy and growth becomes significantly weakened the following year
• Signs include failure to flower and smaller traps
• Providing appropriate cold exposure during winter is the key to growing healthy carnivorous plants
