Side-necked turtles (order Pleurodira) are an ancient lineage of freshwater turtles distinguished by their unique method of retracting the neck sideways into the shell rather than drawing it straight back. They are found across South America, Africa, and Australia. Well-known pet species include the African helmeted turtle (Pelomedusa subrufa) and various Austro-American chelids. Adults range from 15–30 cm depending on species. Most are highly aquatic, feeding on fish, crustaceans, aquatic invertebrates, and some plant matter. Captive care generally involves a large aquarium with a dry basking platform, water temperatures of 24–28°C, and UVB lighting. Side-necked turtles are generally hardy and adaptable, and their unusual neck-retraction behavior makes them particularly interesting to observe.
