Tropical fish summer care: cooling methods using fans, chillers, and AC, plus oxygen management and water change schedules.
Despite the "tropical" name, most species thrive at 26–28°C and suffer above 30°C. At high temperatures, dissolved oxygen decreases. If fish are rapidly working their gills or gasping at the surface, these are signs of oxygen deficiency.
Bottom-dwelling fish like corydoras and plecos have high oxygen demands and can deteriorate rapidly above 30°C. Know the heat tolerance of your specific species and take appropriate measures.
The most accessible and cost-effective cooling method is cooling fans. By blowing air across the water surface for evaporative cooling, a 2–4°C temperature drop is achievable. Affordable and easy to install. However, increased evaporation requires careful water level monitoring and top-offs.
Fan effectiveness depends heavily on humidity. During rainy season with high humidity, evaporation slows and cooling effect diminishes. Fans alone may not suffice when room temperatures exceed 35°C, making air conditioning the ideal complement.
Setting room air conditioning to around 28°C combined with fans or a chiller provides the most stable method. Air conditioning alone can manage water temperature, but fans and chillers serve as backup against temperature fluctuations when away or sleeping. Higher electricity costs are a necessary expense to protect your fish.
In case of power outages or chiller failure, frozen water bottles can be floated in the tank as an emergency measure. Use small bottles and monitor the thermometer to avoid rapid temperature drops. This is strictly an emergency measure—regular use creates excessive temperature swings.
Keep several frozen bottles stocked in the freezer for emergencies. A digital thermometer with max/min recording is useful for tracking temperature fluctuations while away.
Water quality deteriorates faster at high temperatures, so increase water change frequency beyond normal. Match temperature before adding new water. Adding cold tap water directly risks temperature shock.
Summer makes temperature matching easier since bucket water warms quickly. Keep each water change to 1/4–1/3 of the tank volume, performing small, frequent changes to prevent sudden water quality shifts. Stagger filter cleaning and water changes on different days to reduce bacterial stress.
On Buri-Choku, you can purchase home-bred, healthy tropical fish directly from breeders. Consult experienced breeders about care and summer management.
