Guide to angelfish care: breed characteristics, ideal tank size and water parameters, compatible tankmates, breeding from spawning to fry rearing, and common troubleshooting.
Angel Fish are mid-sized cichlids characterized by their triangular silhouette and elegantly elongated dorsal and ventral fins. Native to South America's Amazon River basin, they have long been cherished as the quintessential tropical fish. Selective breeding has created a wide variety of color variations, making them popular with both beginners and advanced aquarists. While relatively hardy and easy to keep, they grow surprisingly large as they mature and become more aggressive, requiring careful planning for their care.
Silver Angel, which closely resembles the original species, displays classical beauty with its silvery body adorned with black vertical stripes. Marble Angel features black and silver mottled patterns that are unique to each individual, with no two fish having the same markings. Gold Angel shimmers with golden brilliance throughout its entire body, commanding presence in the aquarium. Black Angel is jet black throughout, displaying a rich and profound beauty that stands out against green aquatic plants. Platinum Angel features a pure white body with a translucent and delicate beauty. Altum Angel is the largest among the original species with exceptional height. While somewhat more challenging to keep, its overwhelming presence offers a charm unmatched by other varieties. There is also a Veil Tail variety with elongated fins, which emphasizes elegance even further. However, Veil Tail fins are prone to damage in strong current environments, so care is necessary.
Adult Angel Fish reach a body length of 15cm, and with height included, exceed 25cm. Because of their tall body structure, tank height is important. Prepare a tank with a minimum height of 45cm, preferably 50cm or taller. Tank size guidelines are 1–2 fish in a 60cm tank, and 3–4 fish in a 90cm tank. Water quality should be slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.5), with water temperature between 25–28°C. External filters are ideal for filtration, with current settings that are not too strong. Angel Fish prefer gentle water flow, and strong currents can cause swimming fatigue. Arranging tall aquatic plants (such as Amazon Sword and Vallisneria) in the layout recreates a natural environment. Creating adequate hiding places with driftwood and rocks helps the fish feel more secure and calm.
When keeping Angel Fish with other species, size compatibility and temperament are crucial. As Angel Fish mature, they will prey on smaller fish that fit in their mouths. Adult-sized Neon Tetras and Guppies are likely to be consumed. Suitable tank mates include medium-sized characins (such as Congo Tetra and Lemon Tetra), Corydoras, Plecos, and large Rasboras. When keeping multiple Angel Fish together, pairs may form as they mature and aggressively attack other individuals. Keeping 5 or more in a 90cm or larger tank can help distribute aggression. While Discus Fish have similar water quality preferences, they are more delicate and may be intimidated by the Angel Fish's dominant personality. Avoid keeping with small shrimp, as they will be preyed upon. Shrimp the size of Amano Shrimp are relatively safe, though individual variation exists.
Angel Fish are relatively easy to breed. Mature pairs will begin cleaning flat surfaces (such as Amazon Sword leaves, breeding cones, or glass surfaces), where the female deposits eggs and the male fertilizes them. They produce 200–400 eggs per spawning, with parents caring for the eggs. Hatching takes approximately 48–60 hours, with parents maintaining a fresh current over the eggs. After hatching, fry sustain themselves on the yolk sac for 3–4 days before beginning to swim freely. At this stage, feed them brine shrimp nauplii. However, parents sometimes exhibit egg-eating behavior, which occurs frequently, especially in first-time spawning. If egg-eating persists, you can isolate eggs in a separate container and artificially hatch them with aeration. Fry grow rapidly, developing the characteristic Angel Fish body shape within about 2 months.
Angel Fish vary greatly in body shape, fin development, and coloration depending on variety and lineage. At Breedershop, you can directly purchase carefully selected individuals from breeders who prioritize breed purity and beautiful body form. You can also obtain professional advice specific to breeders regarding breeding techniques and care points for particular varieties.
